Accurate research and sound policy positions are at the core of the Business Council’s mission. Through a generous grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, we significantly strengthened our commitment to this mission by hiring a full-time Director of Research and Policy. Created under the Gulf Coast Business Council Research Foundation, this position will produce timely and accurate regional economic reports for the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

Highlights from the report include:

  • Year-to-date sales tax collections for the combined Mississippi Gulf Coast are up 6% through the month of October.
  • The Mississippi Gulf Coast has now expanded its combined municipal sales tax base in 14 consecutive months.
  • According to the Mississippi Department of Employment Security, the sectors which have shown the largest job growth on the Mississippi Gulf Coast are manufacturing, retail trade, healthcare, and tourism.
  • Gulf Coast Business Council President Ashley Edwards comments on the report, “There has always been a correlation between sales tax growth and establishment jobs on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, and we believe that we can carry this momentum into 2016.”
